Meilleur Emballage - Boîtes Métalliques
Awarded in Paris at the end of September for a two peice bowl, diameter 63.7mm and 95ml volume, with an Easy Peel® closure, this printed container creates a strong brand image for a creamed chestnut product filled by Minerve in Brittany.
Cans of the Year 2006
Impress was recognised at the Cans of the Year award ceremony held during the Canmaker Summit, at Dolce Sitges, Spain, in October with three awards:
Food Can Two - Piece: Gold Award
Club luncheon meat cans with drawn rectangular Aluminium body and printed Easy Peel® foil membrane closures were developed for Daesang, South Korea to support the relaunch of the product range.
The cans are available in 200ml and 340ml sizes and are manufactured in La Flèche, France. The containers enable easy meat release by choice of a gold internal lacquer and a shoulder at the top of the can.
Food Can Two - Piece: Bronze Award
This drawn Hansa can has an embossed easyopen end designed for Appel 200g herring and tomato snack. Produced in Cuxhaven, Germany, the container combines the embossed feature with high quality printing to give an outstanding shelf presence.
Aerosols: Bronze Award
Threepiece steel aerosol cans are decorated prior to delivery using a labelling system specifically designed for the aerosol industry. Using a combination of high performance adhesive and receptive can coatings, the Flexidec™ system enables short economical production runs and shorter lead times to deliver supply chain flexibility now demanded by sectors of the market. Developed by the aerosol group in Merthyr Tydfell, UK, customers have been supplied in UK, Spain and France supporting specialised products and new product developments.
MPMA Best in Metal Awards 2006
At the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association awards ceremony held in November, Impress achievements were recognised with no less than 7 awards across a range of categories:
Technical Innovation: Gold Daesang luncheon meat can
These new designs are the result of a close working relationship between Impress and Daesang on a project that was completed in less than twelve months from the initial brief.
The closure is a printed Easy Peel® end specifically designed for heat processing of the products. This end is particularly safe and convenient for both children and older consumers and sets new standards for ease of opening for these types of products.
Technical Innovation: Bronze Flexidec™ short run decoration system for aerosols
The Flexidec™ system delivers high quality graphics and is based on the application of a clear or white polypropylene substrate which is printed and then fixed with a high performance adhesive to the container. Printed with UV curable inks and varnishes in either Letterpress or, more usually Flexography, gives a decorated aerosol can that is sufficiently robust to cope with all the rigours of the supply chain.
Consumer Appeal: Silver New paint range for Akzo Nobel Product/market award: Homecare New paint range for Akzo Nobel
Original and visually powerful designs were created for this new paint range using a standard 4 colour set. A spot matt varnish is used on the Crown logo and the textile effect back panel and the stylish look is completed with a black handle. Matt Sykes, Impress Account Manager commented, ‘’With the vast majority of water based paints packaged in plastic, this new range sends a powerful message to the market. It suggests that customers see metal as the preferred choice for their premium product launches due to its superior print qualities and unrivalled pack performance.’’
Consumer Appeal: Bronze Decorated gift cans for Crabtree & Evelyn
These large rectangular tins are produced by Impress Sutton, UK, for Crabtree & Evelyn using Fine Stone finished tin plate with multilevel embossing to create an outstanding shelf presence.
Produced in just 8 weeks from receipt of the customer’s instructions, the tins are produced in two sizes: large rectangular tins of 240mm x 180mm x 95m which feature stepped lids and square tins of 89mm x 89mm x 125mm which have flat stepped lids.
Functionality: Silver New ring profile for paint cans for ease of opening
Responding to customer requests to improve the ease of opening of paint cans, Impress has developed a new ring profile which eliminates damage to the can ring when removing the lid. The exposed raw ring edge is curled into the ring wall making it impossible to hook or snag the ring with a screwdriver during opening. Less force is required to open the can and the lid makes a distinctive ‘’pop’’ sound when opened.
The lid is also easier to replace and gives better lid retention reducing the likelihood of paint ‘skinning’ during storage.
This improvement will be available across all UK lever lid cans during 2006.
Sustainability: Highly commended Stackable paint can
Designed for Akzo Nobel’s premium Flexa brand, the conical shape allows nesting for delivery from Impress giving transport savings for the customer. The pail is designed to be used for the paint tinting and mixing market where the ring profile is designed to eliminate pigment being trapped and not mixed the shaking process.
The traditional lever lid allows the pail to be opened and closed easily without the need for specialist tools often associated with large volume pails.
The large front of pack display area features a metallic gold effect finish to create an eyecatching design which enhances the brand image.
Richard Moore, Vice President for Strategic Development, commented, ‘’ We are very proud to receive these awards, which give additional impetus to our drive for innovation and continuous improvement. At Impress we work extensively with customers to create differentiated products delivering added functionality, consumer appeal or both. Through our research centre in Crosmières and technical skills throughout our plants we are able to continue to produce the innovative new developments which support growth.’’
