On top of the World!

Acclaimed the 'Best of the Best' by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), the Heineken® TenCan Beer Keg recently received the ultimate accolade in world packaging - the President's Gold Award. It is the very first time that this award has been presented for a rigid metal container thus making it a very special moment for our industry, confirming that metal is indeed the packaging medium of the 21st century - and Impress is leading the way!

As winner of the Deutscher Verpackungs Wettbewerb Award 2007 in Germany, the keg battled it out with 291 entries from 32 countries in Athens, Greece, in October 2007 to receive a WorldStar Award. These, the pre-eminent international packaging awards, are presented for packages that have previously won recognition in national competitions and are judged by a jury of 25. Out of the WorldStar winners, six were nominated for the President's Awards and in Accra, Ghana in May 2008, the TenCan Beer Keg struck Gold!

The keg, developed jointly by Heineken Beer Systems and Impress, comes with a patented integrated pressure system to keep the beer fresh for 30 days after opening. Distortion printing and a special lacquer gives the container a brilliant appearance. Special shaping of the top and bottom of the keg requires precision and quality control delivered by Impress production processes. Plastic handles assembled after filling provide convenient handling for the consumer and also allow storage of the tapping device.

The WPO Award not only recognises the outstanding design and aesthetic appeal of this innovative container but also the challenging levels to which tinplate is drawn to create the distinctive shape whilst ensuring the pressure integrity of the keg is maintained: TenCan proves that economic use of material can go hand-in-hand with superior performance and top-class design.

''This is an outstanding achievement against strong competition from all corners of the world and one that Peter Sauer and the team can be especially proud of,'' said Woep Möller, Director of Impress Specialities.

Francis Labbé, Impress CEO, added his congratulations saying, ''At Impress, we aim to be the best metal packaging company in the world...in everything we do. Taking the inherent qualities of metal - total barrier and sustainability - combined with ground-breaking design and creativity, has produced world-beating packaging for the future!''
