Impress is now able to able to produce paper proofs for printing on metal all the way through from digital data design, to composite sheet, to can, to customer.
The company says this offers greater flexibility with small print runs of much reduced cost while maintaining high print quality and inventory reduction.
The development came from a demand to simplify production methods in the printing process and the project was a collaboration between Impress, AGFA and Springfield solutions.
Using AGFA's Grand Sherpa device the companies have developed the digital paper proofing technology which they claim considerably reduces lead times and increases productivity.
Although digital proofing has been available for some time, it has not been considered accurate enough for the specialist application of matching colours printed on metal.
AGFA had to produce six colours to match the Impress 6 Colour Print Process from what is essentially a four-colour machine. To do this the company worked with the Springfield group which provided its knowledge of colour measurement.
The collaboration has meant a good colour consistency has been achieved by using colour washed paper to simulate base metal. Impress now has access to high quality printing and sophisticated designs can be reproduced.
Graphics manager Peter Hall said, '' Could we be looking at a system capable of producing colour-matched proofs to the level of quality our process demands? The challenge was set and with the enthusiasm of all involved, the answer to that question, we are delighted to say, is 'Yes'.''
