Massimiliano Zanirato describes his progression from accounting to plant manager during two decades in canmaking
Massimiliano Zanirato joined Impress Montecchio Emilia, which produces easy-open ends and three-piece cans, as accounts manager in 1997 when the company took over Capolo SpA. He became plant manager in 2005.
"I started working for Capolo SpA in 1989 so I feel I've grown up with the canmaking business. I began in the accounts department and in 1996 I became the financial controller of Capolo SpA, covering seven plants across Italy."
Zanirato's day at the office begins around 7.15am. "First I have a brief meeting with my second-in-command to check the general situation. I concentrate on safety, feedback from the night shift, suppliers, truck loading lists, and so forth.
"After checking emails and faxes, I hold meetings on production to evaluate and improve plant efficiency. I also tour the plant and do the safety checks and HCCP audits. I actively participate in the fire prevention team when we test the external system, even in the winter at minus 5 deg C!"
Away from work, Zanirato makes the most of his limited leisure time. "I never seem to have much free time and I think it's the same for everyone in business. I enjoy gardening and I read a lot, particularly contemporary Italian literature. I play sport, sometimes with my son, or I go shopping. We often have friends round for dinner and from time to time I tour with my motorbike.
"I have also spent some enjoyable moments watching the skilful players of my favourite football team AC Milan in the Champions' League."
Describe yourself in three words.
Logical, methodical and pro-active.
What does it take to be successful in the canmaking industry?
Industry has advanced rapidly in the last 15 years and it's vital to remain competitive, not only in the marketplace but also on the shop floor. A thorough knowledge of the business and the ability to anticipate events and define strategies for the not-too-distant future is essential, as is an industrial overview based on daily operations.
What's the best advice you've been given?
A financial controller, years ago, advised me never to limit my professional future but to welcome and seize any professional opportunities that came my way.
Who do you most admire?
My father. I remember working with him some years ago and feeling greatly moved by his passion and enthusiasm for everything he did in both his private and professional life.
What is your biggest regret?
Time, it passes too quickly; there are never enough hours in the day!
What's the most exciting aspect of your job?
Due to my background in accountancy, financial figures excite me especially when I can see a good result from actions carried out in the plant.
What do you least enjoy?
I'm conscientious and caring and take my job very seriously - but I suppose I least enjoy being responsible for the safety of the workforce, and concern for the environment.
Where do you enjoy travelling to?
I enjoy spending time with those that I love, and I prefer to do this on a white beach with a turquoise sea. I find this very relaxing.
What's your favourite food?
Italian. I prefer plain food that's not too elaborate or spicy - but having said that, I do like to taste food from different countries.
What's your favourite drink?
This depends on my mood and the time of year. Right now I like Champagne, Italian prosecco and white wine.
What car do you drive?
A BMW.
Where's your favourite place?
My home.
What's your favourite canned product?
Tomatoes, and big cans of tuna fish in tomato sauce.
