Metal packaging manufacturer Impress is looking to "reduce the environmental impact of can-making" with a short-run digital printing system that "avoids the need for additional labelling".
Woep Möller, managing director of Impress specialities division, said the new system responded to demands for smaller, more personalized product runs with fast delivery times, where traditional printing techniques for longer runs were not the best method.
"This is a trend that started a few years ago, but there was no real answer for smaller runs, meaning costs were too high or labels were added to plain cans. Now we can provide an efficient service where there's hardly any changeover time," he said.
The company has installed its first digital printer at its plant in Leeuwarden in the Netherlands, and wants to "roll it out to other plants in the coming years".
Möller suggested that the company's plant in Norwich which produces packaging for paints and coatings, might be a possible location.
