microwaveable metal packaging

“Never use metal packaging in the microwave!” We've all heard the warnings ... until now.  Impress has taken microwave cooking to a new frontier with revolutionary new packaging formats that are both metal AND microwaveable.

Changing consumer patterns and the need for convenience food and packaging challenged the metal packaging sector  to be innovative in the microwaveable meals market segment. According to the Fraunhofer Study carried out in 2007, shallow and wide opening metal trays in microwave ovens are safe under normal conditions of use and they can be used without risk.

Impress’ range of microwavable metal trays
Impress launched its microwavable metal trays in 2007 and is actually offering the following shallow and wide opening formats especially created to be heated in microwave ovens (see images, right):

     127mm diameter x 35 mm height (Bowl 127) – steel / alu
     153mm diameter x 35mm height (Pastoral) – steel
     200 x 140mm x 35mm height (Fidelio) – steel
     148 x 96 x 33mm height (Large Hansa) – alu
     160 x 101x 30mm height (123 can) – alu

User guidelines
Risk of incident or accident increases with the misuse of trays, or user error. To guarantee an efficient and safe heating process for the Impress range of bowls described above, you must comply with user guidelines on how to heat metal trays in microwave ovens. Please click here for the guidelines.

Advantages of using metal over alternative solutions
     • Suitable for microwave and oven: no melting at high temperatures
     • More uniform heating: less cold and hot spots - see image below
     • Secondary packaging savings: no excess packaging needed
     • Energy savings for chilling: storage at room temperatures
     • 100% recyclable: endlessly recyclable with highest recycling rates
of any packaging material in Europe

Metal respects the environment
Modern shapes and materials help the metal packaging industry save on raw materials used for production, and therefore on waste. Less waste also means a reduction in CO2 emissions.

The average recycling rate for metal is more than 70% throughout Europe, the highest compared to other materials. All metal collected is 100% recyclable without loss in quality – no matter how many times it is recycled.

Your purchase of a microwaveable metal tray for non-chilled food is an investment in the environment. More information can be found at www.empac.eu.

Consumer response
Qualitative consumer research confirmed that six out of seven consumers preferred the microwaveable metal tray. Consumer tests have shown that metal packaging not only meets a consumer’s needs with regards to their choice for environmentally friendly packaging, but that metal actually influences buying decisions in favour of certain products: It’s easy to hold, easy to open and easy to heat. And, of course, Impress’ microwaveable trays with lids include a large surface for product branding and promotion.
